Oblivion, a sci-fi movie directed by Joseph Kosinski, who also directed Tron: Legacy and commercials for Halo 3 and Gears of War respectively.
This movie starring Tom Cruise (Jack Harper), Olga Kurylenko (Julia), Andrea Riseborough (Victoria), and Morgan Freeman (Malcolm Beech).
The setting of Oblivion is a dystopia in 2077, where Earth had war with some aliens and the Earth was destroyed, as a result from the war.
Earth is now a desert planet, left only Jack Harper and Victoria. They stayed back to look after the drones that are patrolling the Earth to fight off aliens, the scavengers.
The plot clearly shows that Jack and Victoria live in a “routine world” where Jack did the maintenance patrol every day.
Oblivion has pretty limited scripts or dialogues in the early stage and it’s moving in a slow pace. I think it’s all fine and it’s not entirely very slow, just right.
I personally think it has a very good character development to Jack Harper as the movie focused on Jack Harper’s life, and past life.
I personally didn’t really like any Tom Cruise movies coz I think his acting is a bit stiff. But anyhow, this movie is superb.
The cinematography and special effects are pretty good. It might not have many action scenes and at some points the pace are a bit slow, those are good build-ups to Jack Harper’s character.
Victoria (Andrea Riseborough) plays the ‘main actress’ role in the first half while Julia (Olga Kurylenko) plays that role in the second half of the movie.
I don’t give spoilers so just watch and figure it out.
As the director Joseph Kosinski already pointed out that this movie pays tribute to old sci-fi movies, some people can relate to elements from Wall-E, a wasteland of Earth and drones.
Apart from those mentioned, the movie’s soundtrack was composed by M83, a French electronic/shoegaze band and they are pretty good, too.
The soundtracks reminded me of Inception, which I love it very much. Good soundtracks give more feel and mood to Oblivion.
I don’t know why but I think Oblivion can have its own cult of sort, with a lot of questions remained to be answered or discussed.
I’m giving it a good 8/10 for its plot and of course, the soundtrack. I have friends think this is a mediocre movie, so, it’s for you to decide.
