ONE OK ROCK – The Beginning, Rurouni Kenshin Live Action Theme Song

ONE OK ROCK, is a Japanese rock band formed in 2005 consisted of vocalist Takahiro Moriuchi or better known as Taka Morita, guitarist Toru Yamashita, bassist Ryota Kohama, and drummer Tomoya Kanki.

It was originally a 5-piece band but Alex Onizawa left the group in 2009.

Although they released their first studio album, Zeitakubyo in 2007, and 6 singles over the years, I’ve only heard of them in this song, their 7th single, ‘The Beginning”, the theme song for Rurouni Kenshin (Samurai X) Live Action Movie.

They were also famously known for the single “Re:make/No Scared” where the latter is being used as the main theme for Black Rock Shooter (BRS) video game.

For any Rurouni Kenshin fan, be it manga or anime, if you have watched or read the whole story you would definitely love this song as the lyrics are pretty meaningful when it applies to Kenshin Himura, the protagonist of Rurouni Kenshin.

Despite not understanding the meaning of the Japanese lyrics, the English lyrics are sufficient to tell the story of Kenshin Himura, his struggle and to adapt himself in the early Meiji-era, his after-life for being an assassin.

By listening and reading their lyrics, one can tell ONE OK ROCK is a rock band with heavy Western influence with major English lyrics and their style.

Some people may compare their style to the nu-metal of Linkin Park but for me, they are nothing like that and ONE OK ROCK is probably the next thing in J-Rock, ever since B’z, Mr Children, Luna Sea, Glay, and L’Arc-en-Ciel.

The Japanese music scene is a fast moving industry where unsuccessful artistes would be replaced in a short period of time, leaving a lot of them being a one hit wonder.

Being a Japanese music fan, there’s no energetic or I would say awesome band around for a long time, even taking into account in the likes of Asian Kung-Fu Generation, UVERWorld, FLOW, Nico Touches The Wall, Abingdon Boys School, and many others, that can make an impact as deep as ONE OK ROCK.

ONE OK ROCK, comes from “one o’clock”. Due to the Japanese pronounciation of ‘r’ and ‘l’, it became “o’crock” or “o’krock”, which later separated to become “ok rock”.

So here’s the music video and lyrics of ONE OK ROCK’s “The Beginning” and a trailer of Rurouni Kenshin Live Action Movie.

ONE OK ROCK – The Beginning music video

ONE OK ROCK – The Beginning

Just give me a reason
To keep my heart beating
Don’t worry it’s safe right here in my arms
As the world falls apart around us
All we can do is hold on, hold on

Take my hand
And bring me back

I risk everything if it’s for you
I whisper into the night
Telling me it’s not my time and don’t give up
I’ve never stood up before this time
Demo yuzurenai mono itta kono te wo hanasanai

So stand up, stand up (Just gotta keep on running)
Wake up, wake up (Just tell me how I can)
Never give up
Kuru wa shimi hodo setsunai

Just tell me why baby
They might call me crazy
For saying I’d fight until there is no more
Urei wo fukunda senkougankou wa kankakiteki shoudou
Blinded, I can’t see the end
So where do I begin?

Say not a word, I can hear you
The silence between us
Nanimo nai you ni utsuteru dake
I take this chance that I make you mine
Tada kakusenai mono kattate yori misekakete

So stand up, stand up (Just gotta keep on running)
Wake up, wake up (Just tell me how I can)
Never give up
Kanashimi to setsunasa

Just give me a reason
To keep my heart beating
Don’t worry it’s safe right here in my arms
Kudaketenaide saite jita kono omoi wa
So blinded I can’t see the end

Look how far we made it
The pain i can’t escape it
Kono mamajya mada owarase koto wa dekinai deshou
Nando kutabarisou demo kuchi hateyou tomo owariwanaisa
So where do I begin?

Nigirishimeta ushinawanu youni to
Te wo hirogereba koboreochisou de
Ushinau mono nado nakatta hibino dasei wo sutete…kimi wo

Just tell me why baby
They might call me crazy
For saying I’d fight until there is no more
Fureri ukanda senkougankou wa kangakiteki shoudou
Blinded, I can’t see the end

Look how far we made it
The pain i can’t escape it
Kono mamajya mada owaraseru koto wa dekinai deshou
Nando kutabarisou demo kuchi hateyou tomo owariwanaisa
It finally begins…

Remioromen – Konayuki, 1 Litre of Tears (Ichi Rittoru no Namida)

Remioromen is a Japanese rock band comprised of Ryota Fujimaki (vocals, guitar), Keisuke Maeda (bass) and Osamu Jinguji (drums) in 2000..

“Konayuki” is taken from Remioromen’s third studio album, Horizon, released in May 2006..

*Taken from Google Images*

In MTV Video Music Awards Japan 2006 (MTV VMAJ 2006) Remioromen Music Video “Konayuki” won The Best Pop Video Award.

If you are an avid fan of Japanese drama (J-dorama) then you would have known the meaning of 1 Litre of Tears..

1 Litre of Tears (Ichi Rittoru no Namida) is a Japanese drama about a girl who was diagnosed with an incurable degenerative disease at 15, but was able to continue her life until her death at the age of 25..

The drama is based on a real story of a girl named Aya who suffered from a disease called spinocerebellar degeneration – a terrible disease where the cerebellum of the brain gradually deteriorates to the point where the victim cannot walk, speak, write, or eat..

Those who have watched this drama would definitely agree with me that you could have cried one litre of tears..It is that saddening..

It’s a very sad drama, yet it’s very inspiring to those who have lost hope in their life..

The drama starring Erika Sawajiri (Aya Ikeuchi), Ryo Nishikido (Haruto Aso), and Kenichi Matsuyama (Yuji Kawamoto of Death Note’s L fame)..

This song, “Konayuki” by Remioromen is an insert song of the drama..It adds up the dramatic effect and it’s a very nice song..

Whenever I go to Red Box I would definitely choose this song to sing, and they provides romanized lyrics..

Here is the romanized lyrics and music video of “Konayuki” by Remioromen..

Glay – I’m In Love, For Japan Earthquake Relief #prayforjapan

Last Friday on 11th March 2011, Japan suffered their worst earthquake so far, a 8.9 magnitude earthquake..

Japan, being one of the most advanced country in terms of technology and also city development, handled the massive earthquake pretty well, considering one of the popular countries that have earthquakes..

Unfortunately, the 8.9 magnitude earthquake caused a massive tsunami hit on Northeast of Japan, Sendai..

From earthquake leads to tsunami and then radiation due to meltdown of nearby nuclear plants..Tragedy maximum :(

On 25th June 2011, the 10th MTV Video Music Awards Japan has become MTV Video Music Aid Japan, serves as an awareness and fund-raising campaign of some sort benefiting the Japanese Red Cross..

Here’s a song from Glay called “I’m In Love”, an old song back somewhere in the last 90′s..

Let’s show some love to Japan and I don’t want the anime industry to die!

Here are 2 videos, one from the GLAY Survival Expo 1999 at Makuhari Messe, gathered a large crowd of 200,000 people, making it the largest concert ever held by one single act in Japan..

Another video is at GLAY 15th Anniversary Special 2009, The Great Vacation at the Nissan Stadium, a two-day event which have gathered 150,000 people..

Ayaka – I Believe

Ayaka Iida, or famously known as Ayaka, is quite a talented Japanese singer and already been in the industry for 4 years..

Ayaka is fairly famous among J-pop fans but was kinda low profile as opposed to big names like Utada Hikaru, Ayumi Hamasaki, Mika Nakashima, and Yuna Ito, just to name a few..

It was pure coincidence that I stumbled upon Ayaka’s songs on a MAS plane (737-800) and I was enjoying to the tracks very much..

Ayaka released her first album, First Message, in November 2006 and this song, I Believe, was the first track that I’ve listened to in the MAS plane..

It was love at first sight..I Believe is the opening theme for Japanese drama, Rondo..

This album debuted at #1 on Oricon chart and is also the highest debut sales for a female artiste since Mika Nakashima’s debut album..She released her second album, Sing to the Sky in 2008..

Ayaka is a winner of Best New Artist in 48th Japan Record Award 2006 and Best Artist in Japan NTV Awards 2008..

She’s also been diagnosed with Grave’s disease and is currently putting her singing career on hold..

I hope you enjoy the song as much as I do :)

Here’s the music video and lyrics of I Believe by Ayaka (Iida)..

Shiina Ringo – Gibusu

Shiina Ringo, born Shiina Yumiko, a familiar to most Japanese-influenced people and might be a stranger to those who doesn’t really follow Japanese culture..

Not to say that I’m an avid follower of Japanese culture but I see myself as a person who knows numerous Japanese artistes from my interest of listening to anime songs..

Even I haven’t heard of Shiina Ringo until recently heard a friend sang a song of hers in Redbox and I was mesmerized..

At some extent, Shiina Ringo is considered as a cult rather than a true iconic singer such as Utada Hikaru or Ayumi Hamasaki..

Shiina Ringo‘s popularity is no less than the both said-to-be queens of pop in J-Pop, just that Shiina chose not to be in the mainstream, hence the lacked of publicity..

She’s a solo musician, singer-songwriter, and her songs have her own style..She’s also a member of Tokyo Jihen..

Most of her songs contained complex lyrics and she also used varied of instruments with each album..

No doubt she’s a “cult” in Japan and her love towards music would never stop her from producing more and more art piece that would make you go WHOA!

I bet this song, “Gibusu” (or “Gibs” in English) is a familiar piece to those who’ve heard of Shiina Ringo and is also one of Shiina’s favourites..

“Gibusu” is taken “Shoso Strip” album, Shiina’s 2nd album, released in March 2000..

If you have some free time to spare, do head over to Shiina Ringo’s Wiki Page and have some good read..I think it’s kinda rare to have a Japanese artiste to have such long entry in Wiki..

So here’s a live video of Shiina Ringo performing “Gibusu” and “Gibusu” song lyrics..
