Kasabian – West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum, Thick As Thieves

How many of you are into Brit-rock influenced music, with the likes of Oasis, The Strokes, Muse, The Jets, etc etc..

After the world-renowned event of MTV World Stage being held in Sunway Lagoon, Malaysia, I bet more Malaysians are getting aware of Kasabian, other than those high-flying All-American Rejects, Hoobastank, and not-my-type-of-band Boys Like Girls..

Kasabian, formed in 1999 in Leicester, Leicestershire, only heard and liked by their fellow countrymen in the past few years..Very few people have had heard about them, especially those who are into mainstreams..

For those who are familiar with Kasabian’s Empire (2006) album, I reckon that you would love their newest album, West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum (WRPLA) as well, officially released June 2009..

I have to say that WRPLA, a 12-track album, is less aggressive than Empire in the sense that Empire consists most rock and face-paced songs which on the contrary, WRPLA has more risky songs when it’s sold in Malaysia..

I would say Malaysians would pick up Empire in a fingersnap but would take some patience with WRPLA, where I would compare it with Muse‘s older albums with the newer ones..

Muse‘s older albums such as Showbiz and Origin of Symmetry are the hypes in Europe even though they are not in the mainstreams..

Malaysians only started to accept their later albums like Absolution and Black Holes and Revelations with hits like “Time Is Running Out” and radio-friendly “Starlight”..

Personally, I too enjoyed listening to Empire compared to WRPLA, but there are few good songs that are recommendable as well..

Not that the songs in WRPLA are unacceptable but some of the songs are a bit slow-paced, if to be fit into an alternative rock band’s image..

The first-single “Fire”, would project the success of WRPLA a bit and if you enjoy listening to “Fire”, I would say “Fast Fuse”, “Thick As Thieves” and “Underdog” would be nice as well..

If you are a non-mainstream type of person like me, “Ladies And Gentleman (Roll The Dice)” and “Happiness” are like the hidden gem, at least for me..

There’s an instrumental track in WRPLA, “Swarfiga”, which I think is not aggressive enough but sticks to its Kasabian-style of song, fortunately..

I would give it a 3/5 for this album..

Here I would post the song “Thick As Thieves” together with its lyrics, which I think is a bit tensed, and relaxing at the same time..

Kasabian – Thick As Thieves

There we were thick as thieves
Frightened by shadows and the autumn leaves
We wore stolen hats, fitted soles
Aided by lies amongst the media foes

And hey oh, where did it go?
When did we lose our sight?
And it’s a nice show, the ones we perform
Performing it day and night, night

See the lights upon my face
Walking in circles with the human race
And all the little people they want to be free
But I can’t get there ’cause I’ve got you holding me back

And hey oh, where did it go?
When did we lose our sight?
And it’s a nice show, the ones we perform
Performing it day and night, night
Let me be free

Gave you all the high skies but you gave me night
I gave you all the high skies but you gave me night
I gave you all the high skies but you gave me night
I gave you all the high skies but you gave me night
Let the lights sing again

There we were thick as thieves
Frightened by shadows and the autumn leaves
Goodbye my sweet, goodbye, goodbye
